Early to Middle Eocene , (13a)

Province:
Heilongjiang

Type Locality and Naming

Jiayin Basin. The naming section is located in the No. 59-1 well of the Wuyun Township coal mine, Jiayin County, Heilongjiang. Named as the Wuyun rock series by Wang Dawei et al. in 1959, renamed as Wuyun Formation by Wang Dawei in 1961.

Light gray or brown and green sandy conglomerate, sandstone, mudstone and shale with lignite beds. The thickness is 2–122 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Coarse-grained sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It has a disconformable contact with the underlying Upper Cretaceous Furao Fm.

Upper contact

It has an unconformable or disconformable contact with the overlying Neogene Sunwu Fm.

Regional extent

It is distributed in Jiayin, Dedu and Pingyang counties.

GeoJSON

Fossils

The formation contains such fossil plants as Sequoia, Myrica, Platanus, Alnus, Betula, Corylus and Cercidiphyllum. The general aspect of the sporopollen assemblage is similar to that of the Fushun flora of Liaoning and the Wutu flora of Changle, Shandong.

Age

With regard to the age of the Wuyun Formation, some people think that it is Paleocene–Eocene (Wang Dawei et al., 1961; Li Yuntong et al., 1984) and others assign it to Paleocene (Heilongjiang Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, 1994). According to the characteristics of the contained plant and sporopollen assemblage and the stratigraphic correlation with the related horizon in the adjacent Huadian basin, its age is very likely to be early-mid Eocene.
